Contact lens claims, cleared up

Contact lens claims, cleared up

Does sitting too close to the television really damage your eyes? Can carrots help you see in the dark? If, like us, you’re disappointed by your lack of night vision (despite incorporating kilograms of the orange root vegetable into your daily diet), we’re here to tell you why.

A number of eye care claims have been circulating for years, so we're pulling you out of the dark and putting these outlandish myths to bed. Below, we’ve sorted the fact from the fiction to list the most common claims when it comes to eye health.

‘Eating carrots improves your eyesight’

There is some truth in this… carrots are high in Vitamin A, which means they can help vision. As well as carrots, there are a number of other foods that help enhance your sight, such as ingredients containing Omega 3 and 6, as well as flax seeds and leafy vegetables. You can’t expect to see any immediate effects of this though so it’s more of a long-term commitment to eye health than a quick fix for poor vision!

‘Sitting too close to the television can cause long-term damage your eyes’

Myth! It’s unlikely to cause long-term damage, but it will strain them. Both TV and computer screens can dry your eyes out, because you naturally blink less when you’re staring at a screen, so if you’re online for the whole day then your vision could feel a little blurry by the end of it. You might notice this when you step away from your screen and are on your way home - your eyes will almost become stuck in close vision mode. If you’re conscious of this throughout the day, the effects can be minimized (make sure you blink more than you feel you need to, and look away from your screen every 10 minutes or so).

‘Putting cucumber on your eyes is a legitimate beauty hack’

Yes, cucumbers can help to reduce the water retention around your eyes. This method can make your eyes appear less puffy and decrease any swelling, which is why it’s become such a beauty go-to over the years. It’s unlikely you’ll see any huge benefits after one application but after a few tries your eyes will likely feel a lot more refreshed.

‘Are eye behaviours genetic?’

Yes, if both parents are short-sighted or long-sighted then their children are more likely to be too. The same goes for glaucoma and macular degeneration.
